Oregon’s Congressional delegation is asking for a renewed commitment to the Western Oregon Operating Plan, also known as “WOOP”, to better respond to wildfires. The current plan is set to expire in 2024.

In a letter to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Oregon’s U.S. Senators and Representatives said the state is unique, with its “patchwork” of federal, tribal, state, county and private timberlands. They say the cooperative agreement is essential, given the ongoing risk of catastrophic fires.

Senator Jeff Merkley has invited the Interior Secretary to speak to his Appropriations subcommittee in May.
