Washington State University said stripe rust was discovered around the Mt. Vernon area earlier this month. The wheat stripe rust, discovered April 13th-14th, was up to 60% severity on susceptible varieties, while barley stripe rust was up to 40% severity in susceptible varieties. According to school officials, although barley stripe rust was relatively uniform and severe compared to this time of the last year, the severity of wheat stripe rust is normal for this location.

Then a few days later, WSU crews were checking locations across southern Washington and northern Oregon, and found no rust on those plants. According to WSU, since stripe rust pressure is currently low in the inland Pacific Northwest, fungicide application is not recommended in the early growth season for winter wheat, unless stripe rust is observed in fields.

In addition to Washington and Oregon, wheat stripe rust has been reported so far in Louisiana and Texas.
