According to NASS farmers across Idaho intend to plant a little more wheat and hay in the year ahead, but in response, producers plan on planting less barley, sugar beets and corn in 2022. The March 31st, NASS report also shows Idaho growers plan to reduce the amount of chickpeas and dry beans planted this year. The first Prospective Planting Report of the year offer an early glimpse not only of what farmers intend to plant in 2022, but also that farmers across the Gem state have no plans to leave a large number of fields fallow this year, despite higher input costs.

Roughly 2,000 Idaho farmers were surveyed.

According to NASS, Idaho farmers intend to plant nearly 1.3 million acres of wheat during the 2022 growing season, up slightly from last year. Idaho farmers expect to harvest 1.26 million acres of hay in 2022, up slightly from 1.24 million acres last year.

The report estimates Idaho farmers will plant 510,000 acres of barley in 2022, down 2% from 520,000 acres in 2021.  Idaho leads the nation in total barley production.  Idaho farmers plan to plant 350,000 acres of corn in 2022, down 8% from 2021.  Sugar beets acreage is expected to be around 170,000 acres this year, off 1% year-over-year.

Idaho farmers are set to plant 58,000 acres of chickpeas, this year, which would be a 27% year-over-year decrease.  It’s not just Idaho where chickpea acres are expected to decrease.  According to NASS, nationwide acres will drop 18% this year.  Idaho dry bean acreage is expected to total 47,000 in 2022, down 19%, while dry edible pea acres are expected to total 37,000 acres in 2022, up 28% from 2021.
