Winter Wheat Crop Looks Bad Nationwide As Discussions Of Abandonment Increase

The condition of the national winter wheat crop continues to drop.

“[Nationally] 27% good to excellent, 41% very poor to poor," noted USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey. "A week ago we were sitting at 29% and 39% respectively.”

Rippey noted over the past week, winter wheat conditions improved slightly in Montana and Colorado, but many of the other Plains states saw either steady or declining conditions. For example, its estimated that three-quarters of the winter wheat crop in Texas will be abandoned.

"We are seeing 81% of the [Texas] winter wheat poor to very poor. Oklahoma, where abandonment is expected to be more than 45%, we’re seeing 52% of the crop rated very poor to poor.”

Meanwhile, when it comes to the top producing winter wheat state, Kansas, 41% of the crop is rated poor to very poor.
