So far this year, US dairies have produced little less milk than they did by this time in 2021. That drop comes on fewer cows as well. The latest USDA milk production report putting April's milk output at 19.2 billion pounds, just about 1% less than April a year ago. The milk cow herd smaller, down by 98,000 from April last year. Milk per cow the same as a year ago. USDA Outlook Board Chairman Mark Jekanowski's expects this year's milk output to be 226.7 billion pounds.

"And for 2023, that would increase to 229.5 billion pounds."

An increase up about 1%, enough of an increase to bring next year's all milk average price down from its record high 2022 price of $25.75 per hundredweight. Reflecting that higher expected production.
