April has been a unique month for 2022, at least when it comes to weather.  After several months of dry and warm weather, April has felt more winter-like than the 2nd-half of January, February, March.  Much of the area has seen measurable rain, and in some locations snow showers, which meteorologist Marilyn Lohmann pointed out is welcomed news as the PNW continues to struggle with drought conditions.  But she said those showers did not fall everywhere.

“Unfortunately, we’re still seeing a lack of rainfall in far northern Washington.  Most of the [most recent] systems dropped down across southern Washington and Oregon, which was really good news for these locations, but it’s always kind of interesting when its not evenly distributed across the area.”

Lohmann added some have called the temperatures this month cool.  She said this month has been downright cold.

“Some of the temperatures late last week and through the first part of the weekend, we averaged temperatures about 15-20 degrees below normal, throughout the days.  And for the month, we’re running 5-8 degrees below normal.”

Lohmann noted as we head toward the weekend, temperatures will warm to near normal.  But she added another system will roll in early next week, bringing not only another chance of showers, but cooler temperatures again.

What has this cooler, wetter weather done to area soil conditions?
