As you drive through Eastern Washington, you might see grain in piles near the elevators in a few places.

Michelle Hennings with the Washington Association of Wheat Growers said with all the wheat coming in at the same time, sometimes it requires alternative storage options.

“The warehouse allots certain space for that and it’s basically just extra storage because the inside storage is full.”

Hennings said the grain is expected to be gone by spring.

There is also no difference in wheat quality based on where it is stored according to Hennings.

“That’s why they have all these systems in place. If you see a pile that is full, what they’ll do is go in and tarp it. They even have ventilation systems that keeps the wheat fresh, keeps it just like it was stored inside.”

Hennings said grain never needs to be dumped because of the nature of the product but also these measures taken in storage.
