Issues impacting the Oregon cattle industry and cattle producers took center stage during the recent Legislative trip to Washington DC.  OCA Executive Director Jerome Rosa said the April 9th through 12th event allowed producers to meet with lawmakers, federal leaders and others to discuss some of the most challenging issues facing the cattle business today.  Rosa said they discussed Electronic Logging Devices and how ELD requirements could negatively impact the well being of livestock nationwide.  He also emphasizes their support of stable trade opportunities.

“Beef exports account for about $300 a head for the industry.  We support the local markets and a level playing field  in the international agreements.  And we total support expanding export opportunities for U.S. beef.”

Rosa said the 2018 Farm Bill also occupied a lot of their conversation.  He said the OCA would like to see a Foot and Mouth vaccine bank funded by the federal government in the upcoming Farm Bill.

“This has been partially funded and we would like to see it be totally funded.  And we also support a strong conservation title for our cattle producers.”

Rosa added they also discusses wolves and grizzlies.
