Merck Animal Health has introduced Nasalgen 3, a three-way intranasal vaccine that company officials say protects beef and dairy cattle from the most common pneumonia-causing viral pathogens. Dr. Scott Nordstrom is the associate director of ruminant life cycle management at Merck Animal Health.

“Nasalgen 3 mimics natural exposure to the most common pneumonia viruses – IBR, PI3 and BRSV. The intranasal administration of Nasalgen 3 stimulates a strong, early immune response because the vaccine antigens are delivered to mucosal surfaces in the nose – an area loaded with immunologically active tissues.”

Why are intranasal vaccines beneficial to young calves?

“Administering intranasal vaccines to neonatal calves is considered one of the most effective strategies to putting protective immunity in place quickly and establishing a strong foundation for future respiratory protection. Nasalgen internasal vaccines avoid interference from maternal antibodies in colostrum that can block injectable vaccines.”

Dr. Nordstrom said the vaccine is safe for use in pregnant cows and in calves nursing pregnant cows, as well as young calves. Producers can be confident about administration of Nasalgen 3 because of its unique blue shadow dye.

“The blue shadow dye clearly indicates which animals have been vaccinated. In addition, the needle-free administration means carcass quality is not compromised. The product meets best management practices outlined in the industry’s Beef Quality Assurance program.”
